Flower Show 2008 - the organisers were once again left to curse the weather. Entries were down on previous years with many saying that the recent poor conditions had caused havoc with their gardens. Cookery, Handicraft & Children’s sections also had few entries; the one exception being Class 100 which included 22 entries from the primary school. Thanks for this goes to Janet Ronson, her staff and pupils. We hope to collaborate more with the school next year. Village entries were taken by Bunny Rothwell in two classes, Hazel Willis and Kath Pearson. John Steer won the Vegetable section (just) after a close battle with John Blackler. He also came out on top in the flower section and won the Paul Marsden Cup for the most points in show (98). Jean Blackler took top honours in the Cookery and Rene Ashton won the Handicraft section. Jonathon Chapman won the Children’s section along with another two trophies, which included ’68 Youth Club member with the most points. Full details of all prizewinners will be published in the parish magazine and/or the local press. The day ended with the always popular and well-run Prize Bingo. The Chairman would like to thank all of those who entered exhibits in the show, all of those who helped in any way by either donating a prize for the Bingo or Draw, or running a stall and, crucially, his committee, many of whom were there for almost 14 hours. Here’s to next year being a bumper one. Finally, thanks to the football club for the use of the car park.

Village carnival 2008 started with a darts tournament, won by Maltsters landlord Paul Lucas. In the skittles final the Maltsters Arms beat B.L.T. Ben Trant and Jean Blackler won the trophies for the highest gents and ladies scores respectively. Saturday saw the always popular, well organised Prize Bingo. Sunday’s poor weather meant that the scheduled Car Boot sale become a Table Top sale in the Hall. The duck race was well supported and 300 plastic ducks raced down the fast running Harbourne on Sunday morning. Children (and a few adults) took part in the afternoon sports event. Sunday concluded with Songs of Praise in the church grounds with The Brixham Town Band. Monday was Carnival Day and the weather was kind. Details of prizewinners (too numerous to mention) will be published in the parish magazine and/or the local press. Chairman Bob Monaghan and Club President John Horswill, would like to thank anybody who helped in any way over the weekend, in particular the committee who, as always, worked hard to make everything run smoothly.

Street party – this year’s party was well attended and a pleasant ending to the carnival weekend. Thanks to those who contributed in any way to make the evening a success.

Harbourne Shuttle – we still need more volunteers. Could you spare one morning (Wed/Thu/Fri) a month or even one every two months? The more drivers we have, the fewer drives for each it is. You do not need a PSV license, but there is a short test with a driving instructor for insurance purposes. Interested? If so, ring chairman, Brian Lawrence (732092).

Fordstock – we hope to have final details of Fordstock 2008 in next month’s newsletter.
